How Should a Men's Polo Shirt Fit?

A polo shirt is simple, but getting the fit right makes a significant difference.

Too loose and it can lose its shape. Too tight and it can become uncomfortable.

Here's what to look for when choosing your next polo.

The Shoulders

The shoulder seams should generally sit around the natural edge of your shoulders.

If they're falling significantly down your upper arms, the polo may be too large.

If they're pulling inwards and the fabric feels restrictive, it may be too small or simply too slim a cut for you.

The Chest

A polo should give you enough room to move comfortably.

A fitted polo can sit relatively close to the chest, but you shouldn't need to fight against the fabric every time you move your arms.

If you prefer more room, look towards regular or classic fits rather than simply buying an excessively large size.

The Arms

Some men prefer sleeves that sit closely around the upper arm, while others prefer more room.

This is largely personal preference.

Slimmer polo cuts will often produce a more fitted appearance through the arms as well as the body.

The Body

Look at how much excess material you have around your waist.

If large amounts of fabric are bunching at the sides, you may want a slimmer fit.

If the polo is pulling tightly across your stomach or chest, consider a roomier cut or different size.

The Length

The ideal length depends partly on whether you normally wear your polos tucked or untucked.

For casual wear, you generally want enough length to cover the waistband comfortably without the polo looking excessively long.
